An Overview: Philippians is considered to be the epistle of joy and encouragement. We are going to see how the Philippian church was founded and then focus on Paul’s powerful epistle of joy. Philippians will touch and challenge our lives. It all starts on a mission’s trip Paul and Silas went on to Galatia, Philippi, Thessalonica and Corinth. To catch the beginning of the story read Acts 16:1-21.

Acts 使徒16:22-24
The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten. 23 After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24 Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. NIV
群衆もふたりに反対して立ったので、長官たちは、ふたりの着物をはいでむちで打つように命じ、23 何度もむちで打たせてから、ふたりを牢に入れて、看守には厳重に番をするように命じた。24 この命令を受けた看守は、ふたりを奥の牢に入れ、足に足かせを掛けた。(すべて新改訳)
Verse 10 says Paul had a vision to go to Macedonia, an area north of Greece, where Philippi was the foremost city. Think about it. These men were obedient to God’s call and what happened? They were stripped and then beaten until they were bloody, bruised, and nearly dead. Then they were put in the deepest part of the prison, shackled to the wall. Have you ever followed God only to feel like everything that could go wrong did go wrong? What was your attitude? Were you full of complaints or praise? Did you look at your circumstances and feel defeated or to God and feel uplifted? James 1:2 “count it all joy when you fall into various trials” (NKJV) Do you find it hard to count difficulties as joy? I have never been good at math. And God’s math of counting difficulties as joy is doubly hard! But don’t you think it is important that this is one math skill we all should master?
１０ 節ではギリシャ北地方の第一の町であったピリピのあるマケドニアへ、パウロが出かけるきっかけとなった幻を見たことが述べられています。次のことを思い浮 かべてみてください。神の招きに素直に従った彼らを、何が待ち受けていたのでしょうか？彼らは着物をはがされ、血がしたたり落ちるまで死ぬほど鞭で打たれ ました。その後、牢の一番奥に足かせをかけて入れられました。すべてが悪い方に向かっているとしか思えない時に、それでもあなたは神に従ったことがありま すか？あなたはどんな態度をとったでしょうか？不満のかたまりでしたか、それとも賛美の気持ちに溢れていたでしょうか？あなたは置かれた状況に打ちのめさ れていましたか、あるいは神を仰ぎ見て意気を高められたでしょうか？ヤコブ１：２より「さまざまな試練に会う時は、それをこの上もない喜びと思いなさい。」困難を喜びとして受け止めることは難しいと思いませんか？私は算数が大の苦手です。困難を喜びとして数える神の算数は、私にとって二倍も難しいことです！けれどもこの算数の技能こそ、私達がマスターしなくてはいけないとは思いませんか？
Lord, I choose to trust you and learn to count difficulties as joy because I know that you are at work in the midst of all my struggles. I want you to have the freedom to work because I know that you are the creator God who can create beauty out of chaos!
主よ、私が苦しんでいる時にあなたは私の上に働いてくださるから、あなたを信頼して困難を喜びとみなすことを学びます。あなたが御心のままに働かれることを望みます、なぜならあなたは混沌からすぐれたものを造り出す創造主、神でおられるから！

Acts 使徒16:25
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. NIV
真夜中ごろ、パウロとシラスが神に祈りつつ賛美の歌を歌っていると、ほかの囚人たちも聞き入っていた。
Can you believe it? With oozing sores, bloody and in pain, what was their response? Prayer and singing praises! The songs were most probably scripture songs. Their bodies were captured in horrible circumstances. But their spirits were free and soaring in praise. Circumstances aren’t primary, but our attitude toward God is. Paul wrote later in Thessalonians 5:16-18 “Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances.” (NKJV) It seems that we have two choices, complain and wallow in our misery or praise with a heart of thanksgiving! Think of the results. Complaining discourages and depresses us and those around us. Praise lifts hearts and trusts God. And it blesses those around us. Which way do you choose?

Lord, I choose to praise you! It isn’t always easy, but it is always right to do!
主よ、あなたを賛美することを選びます！それは決して簡単なことではありません、でも常に正しいことです！

Acts 使徒16:26
Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains came loose. NIV
ところが突然、大地震が起こって、獄舎の土台が揺れ動き、たちまちとびらが全部あいて、みなの鎖が解けてしまった。
Praise releases the power of God to work in the circumstances. Praise also lifts our eyes to the Lord and takes our minds off what is going on around us. Praise expresses how much we value who God is and we can trust Him with what is happening. Praise also releases resurrection power inside of us. That kind of power does not allow stress to rule us. It releases us so we won’t be saddled with the burden of worry. Paul said in Ephesians 2:6 that we “sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” We have the freedom to trust because our focus is on God and not on ourselves or our circumstances. Praise frees us from the burdens that the devil tries to bind to us. David says it beautifully in Psalm 42. Take the time to read it and be encouraged to praise.
賛 美はその状況における神の御力を解き放ちます。賛美はまた私達の目を主に注ぐように高め、私達の心を身の周りの状況から救い出します。私達がどれほど神の ご人格を尊重し、あらゆる状況の中でも神を信頼することができるか、賛美することで表わすことになります。賛美はまた、私達の内なる復活する力をも解き放 ちます。この力は私達がストレスで支配されることを許しません。私達が苦しみの重荷を負わないですむように開放してくれます。パウロはエペソ２：６におい て語っています。「イエスキリストとともに天の所にすわらせてくださいました。」私 達は信頼する自由を持っています、なぜなら自分自身や周りの状況ではなく、神に目を注いでいるからです。悪魔が縛りつけようとする重荷から、賛美は私達を 自由にしてくれます。ダビデは詩篇４２章において、そのことを見事に語っています。時間をかけてそこを読んでください、賛美する勇気が持てるでしょう。

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners. NIV
神である主の霊が、わたしの上にある。主はわたしに油をそそぎ、貧しい者に良い知らせを伝え、心の傷ついた者をいやすために、わたしを遣わされた。捕われ人には解放を、囚人には釈放を告げ、
Jesus, in Luke 4:18, quoted this portion of Isaiah to declare that it was fulfilled in him. What holds us captive? We may not literally be beaten and bound to prison walls, but many have broken and hurting hearts and are bound in a prison of bitterness and unforgiveness. Many are bound so tightly to their circumstances through worry and stress that they are literally imprisoned by their circumstances. If that is you, isn’t it time that you looked to Jesus? He has come to set you free from bondage!
イエス様は ルカ４：１８で主にあって満たされることを明らかにするために、イザヤ書のこの節を引用されました。（）私達を捕えるものは何ですか？私達は文字通り、打 ちのめされて牢に拘束されている訳ではありませんが、悲嘆にくれて心が傷つき、誰かを恨み許せない感情に捕らわれている人は多いはずです。ほとんどの人が 心配やストレスによって周りの状況にかたく縛られて、文字通り自分の置かれた境遇の中に拘束されています。もしあなたがそうなら、イエス様に目を向ける時 ではありませんか？主はあなたを束縛から自由にするために来られたのですから！
Thank you, Jesus. You have set the captives free! I praise you and worship you for all that you have done for me out of your incredible, loyal, unconditional love.
主イエスよ、あなたは捕らわれた者を解放してくださいました！あなたを賛美します、そして信じられないほどの誠実で無条件な愛によって成し遂げられたことを感謝してあがめます。

Acts 使徒16:28-28
The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!" NIV
そこでパウロは大声で、「自害してはいけない。私たちはみなここにいる。」と叫んだ。29 看守はあかりを取り、駆け込んで来て、パウロとシラスとの前に震えながらひれ伏した。
If a jailer allowed a prisoner to be escape he would receive the same punishment as the prisoner would have had. Can you imagine the jailer’s panic over all the doors being open? The prospect of all the prisoners having escaped was more than he could bear! Suicide would have been less painful than the consequences of all the prisoners having escaped. But why didn’t the prisoners run for freedom? What impact did Paul and Silas’ prayer and praise have on them that held them spell-bound and not running to “freedom”? Praise released the bondage of prison but kept everybody where they were supposed to be. The jailer who had probably been hardened because of his job was the only one still truly bound by fear. Paul and Silas’ praise impacted everyone around them! Paul and Silas had already forgiven their jailer. Praise and unforgiveness can’t coexist! Faith-believing prayer, wholehearted praise and forgiveness will impact you and all those around you!
も し看守が囚人を逃してしまったら、その囚人と同じ罰を受けなければなりませんでした。牢の扉が全部開いていることに、気づいた看守の狼狽を想像することが できますか？囚人が全員逃げ出したということは、とうてい一人では負いきれない罰を受けることを意味していました！自害するほうが、すべての囚人が逃げた 罰よりも痛みの少ないものでした。けれどもなぜ囚人たちは、自由を求めて逃げなかったのでしょうか？パウロとシラスの祈りと賛美には、彼らを魅了して「自 由」を求めて逃げないほどの衝撃があったのでしょうか？賛美は囚人たちを解放しましたが、そればかりではなく彼らを全員とどまるべき所にとどめました。看 守はおそらく任務のため心を固くしていたので、一人だけ心底まだ恐怖に縛られていました。パウロとシラスの賛美は周りの人すべてに衝撃を与えました！パウ ロとシラスはすでに看守のことを許していました。賛美と許さないことは、共存することが出来ません！信仰を持った祈り、心を尽くした賛美、そして許しはあ なたとあなたの周りの人すべてに衝撃を与えるでしょう！
Lord, you are amazing the way you work! Thank you for the freedom you give! You are wonderful and I do stand in awe of your greatness!
主よ、あなたのお働きには驚くばかりです！あなたからさずかった自由に感謝します！あなたはうるわしく、その偉大さを畏れ敬います！

Acts 使徒16:29-31
The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" 31 They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved — you and your household." NIV
看守はあかりを取り、駆け込んで来て、パウロとシラスとの前に震えながらひれ伏した。30 そして、ふたりを外に連れ出して「先生がた。救われるためには、何をしなければなりませんか。」と言った。31 ふたりは、「主イエスを信じなさい。そうすれば、あなたもあなたの家族も救われます。」と言った。
The jailer wanted the same freedom that the prisoners had. Freedom isn’t a matter of circumstances but of the soul and spirit. There is something marvelously infectious about a cheerful heart of praise! Because Paul and Silas had an attitude of praise they were able to witness the truth of Jesus to the jailer. That should make us stop and think and ask ourselves, “How much am I willing to suffer, maintaining an attitude of prayer and praise, so that someone, especially someone who has hurt me, will be saved?” Jesus also was willing to suffer horrendously and die for the people who rejected, abused, and denied Him. What about you? Is your comfort more important than someone coming to know Jesus?
看 守は囚人たちが手に入れたものと同じ自由を望みました。自由とは状況にかかわる問題ではなく、魂と霊にかかわることです。喜んで賛美する心には、驚くほど 人に伝わる力があります！パウロとシラスは賛美にふさわしい態度を持っていたので、看守にとってイエス様の真実のあかしとなり得る十分なものでした。「誰 かのために特に自分を傷つけた人が救われるために、祈りと賛美にふさわしい態度を保ちながら、自らどれほど進んで苦しみを受けることができるか？」そのこ とについて立ち止まって考え、自分に問いかけてみるべきです。イエス様もまた自ら進んですさまじい苦しみを受けられました、さらに自分を拒絶し虐待し否定 した人々のために死なれました。あなたはどうですか？自分を慰めることが、誰かがイエス様に出会うことよりも大切ですか？
Lord, that is just a scary question. Leaving my comfort zone is terrifying! Yet you left yours for me. You suffered more than I will ever understand. I am determined to trust you and let you lead me where you choose to lead because I know that you know the end from the beginning and you work all things for good!
主 よ、それは恐ろしい質問です。自分の安心できる領域を離れることは恐いことです！あなたは私のためにそこから離れられました。そして私には理解できないほ どの苦しみを受けられました。あなたを信頼して、あなたの御心のままに導かれることを心に決めました。なぜならあなたは始まりから終わりまで知り、すべて を善に導くお方だから！

Acts 使徒16:32-34
Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God — he and his whole family. NIV
そして、彼とその家の者全部に主のことばを語った。33 看守は、その夜、時を移さず、ふたりを引き取り、その打ち傷を洗った。そして、そのあとですぐ、彼とその家の者全部がバプテスマを受けた。34 それから、ふたりをその家に案内して、食事のもてなしをし、全家族そろって神を信じたことを心から喜んだ。
Paul and Silas had been instruments in bring the joy of the Lord to the jailer and his family. Can you imagine the release from the burden of sin the jailer felt? Can you imagine the joy that filled his home when they all realized the wonderful gift of salvation that Jesus provided for them? This freedom that he experienced was lived out in joyfully tending to the wounds of his former prisoners and seeing to their physical needs. Who had been the real prisoner in this situation? It wasn’t Paul and Silas. They had been physically bound by their situation but their hearts were free and soaring with praise. The real prisoner had been the jailer. God’s truth is what sets the captive free!
パ ウロとシラスは主の喜びを、看守とその家族にもたらす役目を果たしました。看守が感じた罪の重荷から開放された喜びが想像できますか？イエス様が彼らのた めに備えてくださった救いのうるわしい贈物を、彼ら自身が十分に理解した時にその家庭を満たした喜びを想像できますか？彼が体験した自由は、喜んで自分の 囚人であった二人の傷を介抱して、彼らの身体的な必要を満たしたことから実現しました。この状況において本当の囚人は誰だったでしょうか？パウロとシラス ではありませんでした。彼らの立場は肉体的には拘束されていましたが、彼らの心は賛美と共に自由に舞い上がっていました。実際の囚人は看守でした。神の真 実は捕らわれの身から自由にします！
Thank you, Jesus, for setting me free! Knowing you is the greatest joy and source of peace in my life. I am forever grateful for all that you are and all that you have done for me!
主イエスよ、私を自由にしてくださったことを感謝します！あなたを知ることは、一番大きな喜びであり私の人生の平和の源です。あなたのご人格と成し遂げてくださったすべてに、いつまでも感謝し続けます！

Philippians ピリピ1:1-2
Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons: 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. NIV
キリスト・イエスのしもべであるパウロとテモテから、ピリピにいるキリスト・イエスにあるすべての聖徒たち、また監督と執事たちへ。2 どうか、私たちの父なる神と主イエス・キリストから、恵みと平安があなたがたの上にありますように。
Paul’s letters began first with identification of who was writing the letter. That actually makes a lot of sense. We generally have to look at the end of a letter to see who has sent it! After he identifies himself then he says to whom he is sending the letter and expressing a blessing to them. By blessing them Paul wanted them to receive all the benefits that Christ gives to believers through His death and resurrection. Too often we all try to operate without using God’s abundant grace! Shouldn’t we look for ways to speak words of blessing that hearten others to receive all the advantages and helps that Christ has personally provided for us?
パ ウロの手紙は、書き手である本人の身元を明らかにすることから始まっています。それは理にかなったことです。私達はだいたい手紙の差出人を見るために、手 紙の最後を見るものです！彼は先ず自らを明らかにしてから、手紙を受け取る人の上に恵みがあることを祈っています。パウロは彼らを祝福することによって、 キリストの死と復活を通して信じる者に与えられるすべての恵みを、彼らが受け取ることができることを望みました。神のあり余るほどの恵みを用いずに、私達 はたびたび自分の力だけで頑張ろうとします！キリストがおのおのに備えてくださる益と助けのすべてを私達全員が受け取るために、他の人を励まし恵みの言葉 をかけられるようにするべきではありませんか？
Lord, thank you for the blessing of knowing you! Help me find ways to pass on words to inspire and encourage others faith in you. I desire to have words of blessing not negativity. “May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord my strength and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)
主 よ、あなたに出会えた恵みに感謝します！あなたへの信仰を、他の人に吹き込み励ます言葉をかける力をください。望みを抱いて恵みの言葉を話すことができま すように。「私の口のことばと、私の心の思いとが、御前に受け入れられますように。わが岩、わが贖い主、主よ。」（詩篇１９：１４）

Philippians ピリピ1:3-4
I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy NIV
私は、あなたがたのことを思うごとに私の神に感謝し、4 あなたがたすべてのために祈るごとに、いつも喜びをもって祈り、
The past beatings, abusive treatment and pain were forgotten. Paul thanked God for the people, including the jailer! Paul held no bitterness. Here we see forgiveness and love in action. The past is gone just like our sins are removed “as far as the east is from the west” (Psalm 103:12) Paul expressed joy. It is so important that we speak and write words of encouragement to others. Reading and hearing words of encouragement inspire us to keep on going. They make us feel loved and inspire us to greater faith. I remember my mother telling me about when my sister was a little girl (there are 13 years between us so I didn’t know my sister as a little girl). My mom would criticize and scold her for not doing something good, but my sister didn’t change. Suddenly one day it occurred to mom that she should praise my sister for what she did right. The difference was like night and day! My sister worked harder, accomplished more, and did so with a good attitude. Praise encouraged her to do her best. It wasn’t empty words. Mom’s attitude changed to look for the good and not the negative. What kind of attitude do you have? One that only sees the negative or one that looks for the positive? What do your words reflect about your attitude? Do your words encourage or discourage?
過去の鞭打ち、虐待、痛みは消え去りました。パウロは看守も含めて人々のために、神に感謝しました！パウロは何の恨みも抱いていませんでした。ここで私達は、実行された許しと愛を見ることができます。私達のそむきの罪は私達から遠く離され、過去は消え去りました。「東が西から遠く離れているように」（詩 篇１０３：１２）パウロは喜びを表わしました。他の人を励ます言葉を話し書くことはとても重要なことです。励ましの言葉を読み聞くことは、私達に持続する 力を吹き込みます。それらは私達に愛されていることを感じさせ、より強い信仰を抱かせます。よく覚えていますが、私の母は私の姉の幼かった頃の話をしてく れました。（私と姉は１３歳の年の差があるので、私は姉の幼い頃のことを知りません。）母は姉が良いことをしなかったら批判してしかりましたが、姉には効 き目がありませんでした。ある日突然、母は姉が正しいことをしたら褒めるべきだと思いつきました。その結果は夜と昼ほどの違いでした！姉は頑張りさらに目 的を達成して、良い態度を身に付けました。褒められることによって、彼女は最善を尽くすように勇気付けられました。それは効果的な言葉でした。母の態度も マイナス面ではなく、良いところを探すように変わりました。あなたはどんな態度を取っていますか？マイナス面ばかり目につきますか、それとも前向きに考え ますか？あなたの言葉は態度にどのように反映されていますか？あなたの言葉を聞いたら勇気がわいてきますか、それとも勇気を失いますか？
Lord, I recognize that words can be weapons or tools. I don’t want my words to be weapons that wound but tools that encourage and bless the receiver. Help me, Lord to speak your truth in love that encourage and not discourage!
主よ、言葉は凶器にもなり道具にもなることがわかりました。自分の言葉が人を傷つける凶器にならずに、人に励みと恵みを与える道具となれますように。主よ、人をがっかりさせるのではなく、勇気を与えるあなたの愛の真実を伝えることができますように、助けてください！

Philippians ピリピ1:5
Because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now NIV
あなたがたが、最初の日から今日まで、福音を広めることにあずかって来たことを感謝しています。
One of the reasons Paul prayed with joy for the Philippians was because they weren’t spectators, but full participators in sharing the gospel with others. One of the ways this was expressed was through hospitality. The first one to believe in Philippi was Lydia which led to her whole household also believing (Acts 16:14-15). Her first act as a believer was to invite Paul and Silas to stay with her. The second one to become a believer was the jailer and then his household. Their first act believers was to offer hospitality to Paul and Silas as well. The church at Philippi practiced hospitality. Romans 12:13 in the New Living Translation reads “When God's children are in need, be the one to help them out. And get into the habit of inviting guests home for dinner or, if they need lodging, for the night.” Practice hospitality. Hospitality is giving a sense of home and protection to others. The framework of this church is based on actively being hospitable and touching lives. People feel good about coming to your house. If you don’t feel welcome, you don’t want to go! If your home is open and loving, whoever enters it feels safe. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior we discover what real love, security, and peace are all about. Our homes and churches should reflect our experience in Christ.

Thank you, Lord that you welcome us into your family and give protection over my heart and soul. Teach me Lord how to be welcoming and hospitable to others so that they will feel your love flowing through me.

Have you heard the phrase “Please be patient with me, God isn’t finished with me yet”? That is really good news! God has begun a good work in you and He is patiently, through all circumstances, working in you, through you and with you to bring you into total harmony with His plan for your life. There is a calm assurance that God is still working in you for the good. We also need to be aware that God is still working on others as well and we need to be patient with them. We are all unfinished works in progress. Each one of us is a sinner saved by grace. So let us be patient with ourselves and others and let God keep on working!

The love of God binds people together, not only one way from God to each person, but that love encourages us to love one another. Nothing geographically or circumstantially can separate hearts that are joined by love. We all have God’s grace to bear the distance. God’s love uniting our hearts is the key to the fellowship of believers. God’s grace gives us the ability to gain the perspective needed to be overcomers in any situation. Most of my life I have been separated geographically from my family. Yet I have discovered that as I pray for them God seems to be holding my hand and their hand so that distance doesn’t separate where it counts the most, in the heart. Paul wrote in Romans 8:37-39, “… in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (NIV) And that is truth that we can hold on to. Not only does God’s love flow constantly and consistently to each one of us, it also flows through us to one another.

The power of prayer cannot be overestimated. Prayer changes things. Prayer changes me. And prayer touches the heart of people. What is more powerful than a prayer for others that includes an increase of godly knowledge and perception? What can have more strength in a person’s life then being filled with the influence and effectiveness godly righteousness and its fruit? Do you ever wonder how to pray for others? This pattern of prayer is definitely in God’s will for each believer. Praying for greater godliness in someone’s life is the greatest gift of love you can give. What about praying this for those who irritate you as well as for those with whom you are close? Jesus exhorts us in Matthew 5:44 to “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (NIV) Praying this way for those who cause us problems releases heaven’s authority. It is totally unselfish and wants God’s best. Remember that Jesus died for all, not just for the people we like. Personally, I think I am going to memorize this prayer so that it will be a constant reminder of how to pray for others.

Lord, sometimes I don’t know how to pray for someone. This pattern for prayer is beautiful and powerful. Thank you for showing us how to pray for people. Help me Lord to remember to pray this way for those who feel like enemies as well as for those that are easy to love.

…to the glory and praise of God.

The heart of prayer is to glorify and honor God. How often do we pray that God will do things our way and that the answer will fit our purpose? Jesus prayed “your will be done in earth as it is in heaven” and then again in the garden of Gethsemane that “not my will but yours be done.” God knows best. He knows the end from the beginning. Praying for God’s will to be done reveals the splendor and magnificence of God. If you don’t know how to pray for God’s will to be done, then pray the pattern in verses 9-11. God wants His grace and love to be visible in our lives. He wants His righteousness and love to be the motivation behind our words and deeds. When others see the power of God’s love and righteousness in our lives, they will want to know the source. The door then is open to share the wonder of knowing Jesus and the difference He makes in our innermost being.

Lord, may your love thrive in me! I want to live in the glory of your grace! I want your righteousness to produce godly fruit in me. I want to know you more and see things from your perspective, based on love rather than on my perspective that is selfish and limited. Open my heart and my eyes for a greater understanding of who you are and who I can be through you.

In all circumstances, in all things, no matter what, God is opening doors for you to share the good news of Christ Jesus. The ideal situation to share Jesus is the one that you are in right now! Don’t think, “if only….then I could share the truth of Jesus Christ”. “If only…” is one of the devil’s tactics to delay our telling others in word and deed the joy of knowing Jesus. “If only…” steals from us the operational power of the grace of God in our lives. “If only…” denies trusting God and believing that “… all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28 NIV) Trust God and allow His grace to empower you. Share His love and truth with those around you.

Lord, I know that you are with me no matter what the circumstances. I know that I can trust you and that your grace will empower me to be all that you have purposed for my life. May you be honored in everything I say and do, for you are my Lord and my God.

As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly. NIV

Do you find it interesting that “because of my chains…brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly”? It wasn’t Paul’s wealth or power that encouraged others to share the gospel. But it was his chains! Every struggle and every difficulty you face is powerful in the hands of the Almighty God. Our faith is not in a system, not in having everything convenient and easy. But our faith is in the living God who works amazing things in all circumstances. Don’t be discouraged by struggle. Be encouraged through knowing that God’s mercy is new every morning and He is faithful in all things!

It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. NIV
人々の中にはねたみや争いをもってキリストを宣べ伝える者もいますが、善意をもってする者もいます。16 一方の人たちは愛をもってキリストを伝え、私が福音を弁証するために立てられていることを認めていますが、17 他の人たちは純真な動機からではなく、党派心をもって、キリストを宣べ伝えており、投獄されている私をさらに苦しめるつもりなのです。
Isn’t it sad that some are motivated to preach the gospel out of jealousy of someone else? Consider the motivation for preaching God’s word. If the motivation is out of selfish ambition then that person is setting themselves up to be a failure. What is your motivation for serving God? Is it based on what looks good to others? Or is it based on trying to earn God’s favor? Jealousy, looking good to others, or trying to “earn” God’s favor are based on pride. Proverbs 16:18 reminds us that “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” (NKJV) We must each examine our motives to discover why we are doing things!

Personal insults are not what matter. Other’s motivations cannot even concern you. The one important thing is that CHRIST IS PREACHED! All else pales in comparison to the all-important truth of Christ being taught. We can actually rejoice that the truth of Christ is being shared with those who don’t yet know Him. Not one of us is totally selflessly motivated. We are all human! That is why it is vital that we pray that the Lord creates in us pure hearts and clean hands. What starts out wrong can be corrected by God and straightened out to be a positive in the hands of the Almighty God.

Thank you, Lord that you are the potter and I am the clay. Please create in me a pure heart. Mold me and make me into what is pleasing to you. The attitude of gratitude rejoices! Was Paul looking at the fact that he was in prison while writing this? No! He was rejoicing over prayers that were for his spiritual health and welfare. Our prayers count! Praying for other’s spiritual well-being and strength makes the difference. Christ’s grace is always there. He will never fail us or forsake us. But the power of believing prayer releases spiritual energy. Through prayer we partner with God to see His will accomplished on earth. Prayer is our direct line to heaven’s throne room. James 5:16 tells us that “…The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results.” NLT Put the full weight of your trust in God to work in your prayers and watch what God can do!

Paul was under tremendous pressure of persecution. His hope was in the Lord. But he also had an awareness of his own weaknesses. What kind of reaction do we have to stress? Do we pray that we won’t put Christ to shame? Are we aware of our weaknesses and aware that if we operate in those weaknesses we will be ashamed before the Lord? Do we use the opportunity of stress to present the truth of the gospel or do we look at it as too difficult to present the gospel? Because our emotions become involved in difficulties we all too easily operate emotionally instead of choosing to allow the struggle to be an opportunity to reveal the grace and love of the Lord. Our attitude toward struggle makes the difference! Just as a butterfly struggles to emerge from the cocoon and is made strong and gorgeous because of the struggle, we also need to look at problems as a cocoon from which we can emerge victoriously. Nothing is too hard for the Lord! All the situations in life are opportunities to gain a greater understanding of God’s grace, power, and love. It is up to us to choose to glorify God and let His grace and power work in us.

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. NIV

How do you look at your life on earth? Do you look at your life as an opportunity to reveal Christ to others? Do you think about using every situation as an opening for God’s grace to enable you to do so? It seems to me that we have two choices, either complain and become discouraged or look to the Lord for His grace and power to be operating in our lives. Do we look at death as a gain because we will enter our eternal reward? Or do we look at it as something fearsome and the end? We may not understand what takes place when we die, but we know that the God of love and grace has good things planned for our eternity. Just like walking by faith on earth, death is just another opportunity to function in faith. In our living, Jesus can be glorified. But death is nothing to fear because that is when we receive the reward for being faithful to the Lord on earth.

If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me. NIV

What motivates your conduct? Do you want power? Or prestige? Or popularity? These trigger most people’s conduct. But for Paul, his inspiration for action was to proclaim Christ. He wanted his life to count for eternal values, not the temporary ones. Take a look at pictures of aging movie stars having face lifts, trying to retain their popularity. But they just look like plastic people. Or how about politicians each vying for more power? Or people in the work place? Or even people in your neighborhood who do everything they can to control and manipulate for power and prestige? When those three driving forces are the heart of action, there is always at least one victim hurt. But if your incentive is to live in a Christ-centered way your outlook changes. Your attitude is different. Instead of living selfishly you strive to live selflessly. Your motivation is to see Christ proclaimed in word and deed to all those who are within your sphere of influence.

Lord, keep me from presumptuous sins. Open my eyes to see where my conduct is motivated by anything that displeases you. My desire is to honor you in my heart’s motivation as well as in all I say and do.

Is your Christian conduct dependant on circumstances? Whether we are in adversity or prosperity our responses declare our true heart’s faith. Paul spoke to the Philippians as if he were their father because he loved them as if they were his children. As a parent figure he wanted to see harmony and unity in their family. Paul encouraged them to work together in Christian love. Jesus said in John 13:34-35 “…Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (NIV) Paul is encouraging us through this epistle to show love for one another as well as for God by our conduct and relationships. Unity and harmony are both horizontal and vertical, between fellow believers as well as between you and the Lord. Right responses according to the situation are not an option. Rightly responding in all situations is the goal.

Without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved — and that by God. NIV

Has the thought of what others would think of you ever kept you from being open about your faith? Have you ever felt intimidated by another’s volatile reaction to Christianity? Paul’s assurance is that if you don’t let fear and intimidation rule, then your very fearlessness and consistency will be a living testimony of your faith in the Lord. This kind of fearless faith is the very proof needed to plant seeds of understanding in other’s hearts, even those who openly oppose Christianity. Paul knew what he was talking about. Galatians 1:13 “…(I) intensely persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it” is his own testimony of how he actively persecuted believers. There are many testimonies of people who persecuted Christians. Yet because of the faith and goodness they saw in those Christians, they also became believers. Be encouraged to live what you believe based on who the Lord is, not on what others are doing and saying.

Lord, thank you for your grace that empowers me to live in a way that is a testimony to your greatness. I can’t do it apart from you enabling me. I am just grateful that you do enable those whose heart’s desire is to live for you.

Have you ever considered that the strongest relationships are forged through adversity? “Fair weather friends” is an expression in English that refers to someone who is only your “friend” when it is easy. They are really not a true friend. It is a privilege as well as a relationship builder to go through times of adversity. It is too easy to wish for only good times and think of adversity as an enemy. But adversity is the tool that strengthens us, teaches us, and even enables us. Don’t try to escape it. But let God’s perfect work be done in you and through you even in times of conflict.
逆 境を経て鍛えられた人間関係が一番強いと感じたことはありませんか？「晴天の友達」とは「楽しいときだけの友達」を意味する英語の表現です。それは本当の 友達ではありません。逆境を共に乗り越えて築かれた関係には、特別な恵みが加わります。楽しいことだけありますようにと願い、逆境を敵にまわすことはあま りに安易すぎる考えです。逆境は私達を強め、教え、乗り越える力を与える道具です。そこから逃げようとしないでください。争いに巻き込まれた時も、あなた のうちにあなたを通して働く神の御業にゆだねてください。
Lord, you know I am the first to want to get out of difficult times or to hide my head in the sand. Help me, Jesus, to see the power of adversity and to see it as a friend and not an enemy, a friend who strengthens both my faith in you and my relationship with you. Teach me how to use these difficult times as a testimony to your greatness!

The word “if” in this verse is an expression of strong affirmation. It has a nuance of “since you have” encouragement because of your relationship with Christ, since you have fellowship with the Lord and since you have received tenderness and compassion from the Lord, let that be the inspiration and motivation for your actions. That brings us back to the personal question of “what triggers your responses to vicissitudes of life?” Are you stimulated to godly actions through your relationship with Christ who strengthens you? The opposite of being encouraged and inspired through Christ is to make everything all about you and your self-centered, selfish desires. Something to think about, isn’t it?

Lord, I don’t want my life to be lived “all about me.” But I want to be centered on you, motivated by you and inspired by you. Help me with godly discernment about when I deviate from making it all about you to making it all about me.

A parent rejoices and is blessed when their children are in harmony, respecting one another’s differences and working together. So was Paul when he saw a church family in unity. He felt like their father in the faith so he spoke to them as a father does toward his beloved children. Unity and harmony should characterize Christians. We all need to learn to respect our differences, seeing our divergence as completing us. We are not to be exactly alike. We aren’t carbon copies of each other. But we are created with personalized plans and purposes that are enhanced by working together. Working in unity is what brings out the best in each one of us, just as Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” (NIV)

Lord, I desire for your love to flow through me, inspiring me to accept others and encouraging their faith. Thank you for showing the way! As your disciples were all individualized, I see the beauty of being different but equal in your eyes.

何事でも自己中心や虚栄からすることなく、へりくだって、互いに人を自分よりもすぐれた者と思いなさい。4 自分のことだけではなく、他の人のことも顧みなさい。
The theme of unity is throughout the Bible. Unity based on love is shown through mercy and humility. Psalm 133:1, 3 reminds us, “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.” (NIV) It is something we all want but we don’t always like to give. Look at Micah 6:8 “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” and Zechariah 7:9 "This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another.'” Take time to examine the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17). The first four are about honoring God. The next six are about honoring others. Jesus reinforced the value of the Ten Commandments, but He took them deeper by teaching that it isn’t just the face value of what we do but the heart’s attitude that makes the real difference. We must walk humbly with our God and honor Him by loving others.

Lord, show me where I don’t act justly or mercifully. Show me where I react with pride and self-centeredness so that I can confess these and be cleansed from their unrighteousness. I truly do want to love you with all my heart, mind, and soul and then to love others as you do.

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus. (NKJV) The NIV says, “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.
あなたがたの間では、そのような心構えでいなさい。それはキリスト・イエスのうちにも見られるものです。
It is not uncommon to see bracelets or some other decoration with WWJD (What would Jesus do?) on them. These are to remind us to act like Jesus would in our circumstances. But it is not enough to wear something to remind us. We must put that whole standard for living into our mind, heart, and soul. Jesus described His pattern for living like this “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'” Matt 22:37-39. (NIV) We need to think about our priorities, don’t we? What are the reasons you do what you do? What is your motivation and attitude? If it lines up with this instruction you are honestly, wholeheartedly choosing to have the mind of Christ. What percentage of the time do you operate in this mindset? It’s scary to realize how seldom we all fail in this! But that is no reason to give up! We must stop and think and then choose Jesus’ attitude. Until we recognize our failure to do so we can’t change and choose to live according the model that Jesus set for us.

Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. NIV
キリストは、神の御姿であられる方なのに、神のあり方を捨てることができないとは考えないで、7 ご自分を無にして、仕える者の姿をとり、人間と同じようになられたのです。
Take time to read Colossians 1. There the authority and power that Jesus gave up to come to earth as a mere man is outlined very clearly. Jesus was perfectly God and perfectly human. It is like a child born with one American parent and one Japanese parent. They can have citizenship in both countries and are perfectly Japanese and perfectly American all in one. Even though Jesus was God, He didn’t cling to His rights as God, demanding that we serve Him and wait on Him. Instead, Jesus humbled himself. The religious leaders of the day were self-righteous. Today also, many Christians are so self-righteous that their hearts are hard. Jesus, who was truly the only one born righteous, humbled Himself. That’s amazing, isn’t it? I once read of a man who boasted that he had never sinned and therefore he didn’t need a savior. The Christian who was talking to him asked him many questions like, “have you ever lied?” The man said, “No, of course not!” The Christian asked several more questions of him and the man said he had never done any of those “sinful” things. Finally the Christian looked at the man and said, “Have you ever been proud?” The man thought he was so good and he was proud of it! That made his heart hard and he couldn’t see his need of a savior. Yet, Jesus who had never sinned let go of all his rights and humbled himself!
コ ロサイ１章を時間をかけて読んでください。イエス様が人間の姿となってこの世に来るために、権威と力を捨てられたあらましが明確に述べられています。イエ ス様は完全に神であり、完全に人間でした。それはアメリカ人の親と日本人の親から生まれた子供のようです。彼らは二つの国の市民権を持った、完全な日本人 であり完全なアメリカ人です。イエス様は神であられたにもかかわらず、神の権利に執着せず、私達が主に仕えお供をすることも要求されませんでした。その代 わりにイエス様がなさったことは、自らを低くすることでした。現代の宗教上の指導者たちはひとりよがりです。また多くのクリスチャンもひとりよがりで、そ の心はかたくなです。真実ただ一人の義を持ってお生まれになったイエス様が、自らを低くされました。それは驚くべきことではありませんか？私はかつて、自 分は決して罪を犯したことがなく、それ故に救い主など必要ないと自慢する人の話を読みました。彼と話をしたクリスチャンは、「あなたはうそをついたことは ありませんか？」のような多くの質問を投げかけました。その答えは、「もちろんないさ！」でした。さらに質問を続けてみました、すると彼はそのような「罪 深い」ことはしたことがないと答えました。最後にそのクリスチャンは彼の目をじっと見て聞きました「自分に誇りを持ったことはありませんか？」彼は自分を 大変りっぱだと思ったので、そのことを誇りました！その考えが彼の心をかたくなにしていたので、救い主を必要としていることに気がつきませんでした。決し て罪を犯すことのないイエス様が、それにもかかわらずすべての権利を捨てて自らを低くされました！
Lord, how many times have I let pride and self-righteousness harden my heart? It is an easy trap to fall into! But I want to live by your standards, not mine. I want to have your attitude, motivated by what motivated you. I want to love you and love others more. Lord, by your grace enable me to be the kind of person that honors you in word and deed.
主 よ、思い上がりとひとりよがりから、どれほど自分の心を固くしたことでしょう？いとも簡単にそのわなに陥ってしまいます！それでも自分ではなくあなたの基 準で生きることを願っています。あなたを動かした心構えと意欲をさずけてください。あなたを心から愛し、他の人をもっと愛せますように。主よ、言葉とふる まいにおいてあなたをあがめるために、あなたの恵みで私を強めてください。

Philippians ピリピ2:8
And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross! NIV
キリストは人としての性質をもって現われ、自分を卑しくし、死にまで従い、実に十字架の死にまでも従われたのです。
Romans 12:1 asks us in light of what Jesus has done for us to make our lives “living sacrifices,” wholly pleasing to God. Jesus sacrificed by coming to earth and living a humble life. He further sacrificed himself by dying the worst kind of death on the cross as an act of love for us. Shouldn’t we choose to honor and respect this wonderful gift by choosing to live for Him? As a living sacrifice we have personal rights to the privilege of serving God and others as an act of love. Being a living sacrifice is all about taking responsibility instead of demanding rights, being conscientious about expressing the love of God to others humbly and lovingly, just as Jesus did. It is easy to say that you love Jesus. But is that lip service or your heart’s attitude? 2 John 6 puts it simply and understandably, “And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.” (NIV) Loving others isn’t always easy. When you love unconditionally, there are situations that don’t make loving easy! None of us is lovable all the time. But to do what Jesus would do means yielding your rights to demand your own way and loving unconditionally. It’s not easy and it’s not fun at the moment. But nothing truly valuable is easy!
ロー マ１２：１は、イエス様が私達のために成し遂げられたことと照らし合わせて、自分の命を神に受け入れられる「生きた供え物」としてささげることを勧めてい ます。イエス様はこの世に来て、へりくだって生きることによってご自分を犠牲にされました。主はその上、人間への愛の行為の証拠となる十字架の死による使 命のために、ご自身をささげられました。私達は主のために生きることを選択して、このうるわしい贈物を尊重しあがめるべきではありませんか？生きた供え物 である私達は、愛の行為の証拠として神と他の人に仕える特権をひとりひとり持っています。生きた供え物となることは、権利を要求する代わりにイエス様のよ うに、他人にへりくだって愛情を持って、神の愛を表すために誠実であることに、すべての責任を負うことです。イエス様を愛していますと言うだけなら簡単で す。けれどもそれは口先だけではありませんか、それとも心のこもった態度でしょうか？２ヨハネ６節は明快にわかりやすく述べています。「愛とは、御父の命令に従って歩むことであり、命令とは、あなたが初めから聞いているとおり、愛のうちに歩むことです。」他 人を愛することは簡単なことではありません。無条件に愛するには、難しい情況がたくさんあります。いつも愛らしい人など誰もいません。しかしイエス様のよ うにふるまうことは、自分の思い通りに要求する権利を捨てて、無条件に愛することを意味します。それは簡単なことでもなければ、楽しいことでもありませ ん。けれども真の価値あるものに、やすやすと手に入るものなどありません！
Thank you, Jesus for loving me enough to give up all your rights as God and come to earth to love us unconditionally. Help me to remember this truth so I can pattern my choices based on who you are and what you have done for me. I pray that others might see your love flowing through me!
主イエスよ、神の権利を捨ててまで、私達を無条件に愛するためにこの世に来られたことに感謝します。あなたのご人格と成し遂げられたことに基づいて判断するために、この真実を覚える力をください。他の人に私を通してあなたの愛が伝わることを祈ります！
