This month we start reading the words of hope that came from the pen of one who had failed--Peter. Because of Jesus, failure isn’t permanent. He gives us real hope. God’s grace rescues us and hope (not wishful thinking but living hope) restores us. This godly hope is stable, strong, and real and it gives us the strength to go on and to mature, spiritually growing closer to the Lord of hope. As we continue through this time by God’s grace and the hope only He can provide, our prayer is that each one of us grows closer to the Lord and becomes more spiritually mature.
今月は、失敗したペテロから来た希望の言葉を読み始める事にします。イエス様のため、失敗は永久ではありません。主は私たちに実在する希望を与えて下さいます。神様の恵みは、私たちを救助し、希望的観測でなく生きた望みで私たちを回復させて下さいます。この神聖な希望は、不変で、強く、実在し、私たちを強めて成熟させ、霊的に神様の希望へと近づけるように成長させて下さいます。私たちは神様の恵みと主のみが備えられる希望による時間を続けることにより、私たちの各祈りは神様に近づき、より霊的に成熟して、成長するのです。

Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." 37Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." 38Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times! NIV
シモン・ペテロがイエスに言った。「主よ。どこにおいでになるのですか。」イエスは答えられた。「私が行く所に、あなたは今はついて来る事ができません。しかし後にはついて来ます。」ペテロはイエスに言った。「主よ。なぜ今はあなたについて行くことができないのですか。あなたのためにはいのちも捨てます。」イエスは答えられた。「わたしのためにはいのちも捨てる、と言うのですか。まことに、まことに、あなたに告げます。鶏が鳴くまでに、あなたは三度わたしを知らないと言います。」
Impetuous Peter! He was outspoken. Sometimes he spoke with wisdom. Sometimes he was emotional. But Peter always spoke with passion. The last night the disciples were with Jesus before the cross was filled with intimacy as Jesus talked to them about the future and how to be strong and loving. Jesus shared the bread and the wine to illustrate His commitment to give His life for them. That included Judas, the betrayer, and Peter, the one who would deny Him. Jesus knows our weaknesses. He knows where we will fail. And He loves us anyway. No failure is permanent! When we recognize our sin and confess it the Lord, He faithfully forgives and cleanses us. Satan will try to convince you that you aren’t worth forgiving. Of course that is after he has convinced you that the sin you committed was acceptable. The devil is the ultimate deceiver! Don’t believe his lies! The Lord always restores us when we turn to Him. You can count on His faithfulness!
衝動的なペテロ！彼は遠慮なく言う人でした。時には知恵を持って、時には感情的でした。でも、ペテロはいつも情熱をもって話しました。最後の夜、弟子たちはイエス様が将来やどのように強くなり愛するかについて話された十字架が親密となる前、イエス様といました。イエス様はパンとワインについて説明し、神様の人生を彼らに与えると約束されました。それは、裏切り者のユダと主を否定するペテロも含まれた。イエス様は私たちの弱さをご存知です。主は私たちがどこで失敗するかご存知です。そして、神様はとにかく私たちを愛しておられます。失敗は永久ではありません！私たちがその罪に気付いて主に告白するならば、神様は忠実にお許しされ、私たちを清めて下さいます。悪魔はあなたに許しの価値などないと説得しようと試みます。もちろん、あなたを説得させた後、あなたの犯した罪は受け入れられます。悪魔は、最終的には詐欺師です！悪魔の嘘を信じないで下さい！神様はいつも私たちが神様のもとに帰るなら、私たちを回復させて下さいます。あなたは、主の忠実を期待することができるのです！
Thank you, Jesus for your love and the hope you give even when we fail. You are my Rock, my Hiding Place. I am secure with you! Thank you!!! I am forever grateful for all that you are and all that you have done for me!
イエス様の愛と希望を失敗する時さえも与えてくださる事に感謝します。あなたは私の岩、私の隠れ場所です。私はあなたと共に救出されます！ありがとうございます！！！私は永遠にあなたが私にされたこととあなたを感謝します！

Mark 16:1-7 マルコ16章1～7節
When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. 2Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3and they asked each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?" 4But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6"Don't be alarmed," he said. "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.' " NIV
さて安息日が終わったので、マグダラのマリアとヤコブの母マリアとサロメとは、イエスに油を塗りに行こうと思い、香料を買った。そして、週の初めの日の早朝、日が上ったとき、墓に着いた。彼女たちは、「墓の入口からあの石をころがしてくれる人が、だれかいるでしょうか。」とみなで話し合っていた。ところが、目を上げて見ると、あれほど大きな石だったのに、その石がすでにころがしてあった。それで、石の中にはいったところ、真白な長い衣をまとった青年が右側にすわっているのが見えた。彼女たちは驚いた。青年は言った。「驚いてはいけません。あなたがたは、十字架につけられたナザレ人イエスを捜しているのでしょう。あの方はよみがえられました。ここにはおられません。ご覧なさい。ここがあの方の納められた所です。ですから行って、お弟子たちとペテロに「イエスはあなた方より先にガリラヤへ行かれます。前に言われたとおり、そこでお会いできます。」とそう言いなさい。」
The good news after the devastation of the cross is that Jesus IS ALIVE! That same resurrection power gives us power for living! The angel spoke words of hope, “…go tell his disciples and Peter…” Have you ever failed? Mark, who wrote this, had failed. He must have clung to the hope that “and Peter” gives. Peter had denied Jesus three times. But Jesus never denied Peter. He is always reaching out to those who have failed. His love NEVER fails! Don’t ever let feelings that you are the exception to this rule make you doubt the reality of the love of Jesus! There are no exceptions! The Lord’s unfailing love is always loyal and faithful. Moses, the murderer, understood this (Exodus 2:11-14); David, the adulterer, discovered this (2 Samuel 11); Paul, the persecutor who was called Saul at that time, was humbled by it (Acts 7:58-8:3). You, too, can experience it firsthand. God’s love is always personal! It is never secondhand. All you need to do is reach out to Jesus in response and receive it!
十字架の徹底的な破壊の後の良い知らせとは、イエス様は生きておられることです！その同じ復活力は、私たちに生活に対して力を与えます！天使が希望の言葉を話しました、「行って、彼の弟子たちと、そしてペテロに教えなさい」あなたは失敗したことがありますか？これを書いたマルコは失敗しました。彼は、「そして、ペテロに」が与える望みに執着するにちがいありませんでした。ペテロは3度イエス様を否定しました。でも、イエス様はペテロを決して否定しませんでした。主は、失敗した人々に、常に接触しようとされています。神様の愛は決して失望しません！このイエス様の愛の、真実の法則に疑いの感情を持たせないように！例外などありません！神様の失望のない愛は、いつも忠実で、信心深いものです。人殺しのモーセは、これを理解しました（出エジプト記 2章11～14節）。姦通者のダビデはこれを発見しました（サムエル2 11章）。その時サウロと呼ばれた迫害者パウロは、これによって謙虚にされました。（使徒行伝 7章58節～8章3節）。あなたもこれを直接に体験する事ができるのです。神様の愛はいつも個人的なものです！それは決して中古ではありません。あなたがする必要がある全ては、イエス様に手を差し出し、接触して、それを受けることです。
Lord, thank you that failure isn’t permanent! Thank you that you seek out those who have sinned to draw them back to you. Men like Moses, David, Peter, and Paul show us the reality of your forgiveness. I am humbled and thankful for your unconditional love.
神様、失敗は永久でないことに感謝します。罪からあなたの元へと導き探してくださる事に感謝します。モーセ、ダビデ、ペテロやパウロのようにあなたの許しを私たちにも見せてください。私は屈辱を受け、あなたの不変の愛に感謝します。

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs." 16Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep." 17The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." NIV

How many times did Peter deny Jesus? What did Jesus ask Peter? How many times did He ask it? What was the mood around the campfire breakfast that morning? Use your imagination to see the beauty of restoration being accomplished. Each time Peter answered in the positive Jesus challenged him with three charges, “Feed my lambs,” “Tend my sheep,” and “Feed my sheep.” How are they different? The challenge to Peter and to us is to reach out to those who aren’t yet believers and nurture their faith as baby lambs. “Tend my sheep” is to take care of believers spiritually, nurture them emotionally, mentally and physically. “Feed my sheep” is to teach more mature believers how to reach out, to encourage their faith, and as a good shepherd would do, always take care of people with love and grace. Peter, who knew what failure was (with all the shame and guilt) was restored and changed. No longer arrogant or having the need to be the center of attention, Peter kept himself submitted and obedient to Jesus from that time. Peter was humbled. He lost his self importance and learned how to live fully relying on Jesus.

Lord, you are wise in all your ways! By your grace and wisdom enable me to be all that you would have me to be.
神様、あなたは全ての道で賢明です！あなたの恵みと知恵により、あなたが私にさせる事を可能にしてください。

1 Peter 1:1-2 ペテロ１ 1章1～2節
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God's elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, 2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance. NIV
イエス・キリストの使徒ペテロから、ポント、ガラテヤ、カパドキヤ、アジヤ、ビテニヤに散って寄留している、選ばれた人人、すなわち、父なる神の予知に従い、御霊の聖めによって、イエス・キリストに従うように、またのその血の注ぎかけを受けるように選ばれた人々へ。どうか恵みと平安があなたの上にますます豊かにされますように。
Have you ever lived as a foreigner in another land? Have you ever felt confusion, even frustration, over trying to adjust to a new culture? What reason did you have to live outside your own country and culture? Peter is addressing those who were scattered outside of their own countries because of persecution against their faith in Jesus. Have you ever been persecuted because of your faith? What does persecution do? Jesus said in Matthew 5:10-12, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” And then in verse 44, “… I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.” (NKJV) Jesus recognized that we would face some form of persecution because of our faith. And He wants us to know that persecution works in us to purify our motives and faith. God’s love is for us, in us and to be given out by us. In times of persecution we have the best opportunity to personally experience God’s love and grace and then to pass it on to others. It is in those times of darkness that the hope, joy, and peace we have in Jesus are more clearly seen. If you are facing persecution because of your faith, remember that persecution is an opportunity to grow closer to the Lord, experience more of His grace, and show others the love of God. Man can try to steal your life or your things. But no one can separate you from the love of God! Persecution for your faith doesn’t make you a victim. But it is an opportunity to be victorious!
今まで、外国で外国人として住んだ事はありますか？混乱し、失望さえし、新しい文化になじもうと試みましたか？あなたが自分の故郷と文化の外で住まなければならない理由は何でしたか？ペテロは、イエス様の信仰に対する迫害で、祖国からまき散らされた人々を対応していました。あなたは、信仰のために迫害された事はありますか？迫害は何をしますか？イエス様は、マタイ5章10～12節で、「義のために迫害されている者は幸いです。天の御国はその人のものだからです。私のために、ののしられたり、迫害されたり、また、ありもしないことで悪口雑言を言われたりするとき、あなたがたは幸いです。喜びなさい。喜びおどりなさい。天においてあなたがたの報いは大きいのだから。あなた方より前に来た預言者たちもそのように迫害されました。」そして、44節に「しかし、わたしはあなたがたに言います。自分の敵を愛し、迫害するもののために祈りなさい。」イエス様は、私たちは信仰のため、何らかの迫害に直面することに気付かれました。そして、私たちに迫害が私たちの中の動機と信仰を清めるために働く事を知らせたいと望んでおられます。神様の愛は私たちのためで、私たちの中にあり、私たちにより外に出されます。迫害の中で、神様の愛と恵みを個人的に体験する最善の機会を持ち、それを他の人々へ渡すのです。暗闇の時に、私たちがイエス様の中にある希望、喜び、平安を持つことはより明らかに映ります。もし、あなたが信仰のために迫害に直面しているならば、その迫害は神様に近づき成長し、より神様の恵みを経験し、神様の愛を他の人々にもみせる１つの機会であることを思い出して下さい。人はあなたの人生やモノを盗むもうとするかもしれません。でも、誰も神様の愛からあなたを引き離す事はできません！あなたの信仰のための迫害は、あなたを犠牲者にはしません。でも、それは勝利者になる機会です！
Jesus, thank you for giving me wisdom on how to handle persecution and difficulties. My natural inclination is to run from them rather than embrace them as a gift. Open my eyes Lord to see the circumstances of my life from your perspective.
イエス様、迫害や困難の扱い方の知恵を与えてくださる事に感謝します。私の自然な傾向は、贈り物を幸いとして受けるよりも、むしろ走り去ってしまうことです。あなたの観点から私の人生の環境を見る事ができるように私の目を開いてください。

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead NIV
私たちの主イエス・キリストの父なる神がほめたたえられますように。神は、ご自分の大きなあわれみのゆえに、イエス・キリストが死者の中からよみがえられたことによって、私たちを新しく生まれさせて、生ける望みを持つようにしてくださいました。
When I was a child living in the Philippines, the road leading to where we lived was dirt and full of holes the size of craters! Driving on it was always an adventure in bumps and weaving around the bigger craters. I knew that the bumpier the road, the closer to home we would be. I loved that bumpy road because it led home. Persecution feels like a bumpy road—tough to navigate, but the destination leads to our true home. We have the living hope which was birthed through the power of Jesus’ resurrection. The living hope we have in Jesus frees us from fears and opens the door to a deeper understanding that this world isn’t our true home! The life we live is really the journey to our eternal destination. Think about the agony of the crucifixion. Jesus’ suffering is beyond anything we can comprehend. The fact that the disciples were in despair, thinking none of their hopes would be realized. But truly was God wasn’t finished yet! Jesus’ resurrection brought a victorious living hope. The disciples went from despair to wonder at God’s amazing plan. Never give up! You can trust the living God to bring a living, vibrant victory!
私が子供の頃フィリピンに住んだ時、私たちの住んだ場所へと導く道には、汚れとくぼみの穴でいっぱいでした。車で運転すると、いつもで大きなくぼみ辺りでぶつかり揺れて、それは冒険でした。わたしは、でこぼこ道で家が近づいてきたと知りました。でこぼこ道は家へと導いてくれたので大好きでした。迫害とはでこぼこ道のように感じ、誘導するには難しいですが、目的は私たちの本当の家へと導きます。私たちは、イエス様のよみがえりの力を通して誕生した、生きる希望をもちます。イエス様の中にもつこの生きる希望は、恐れとこの世が私たちの家ではない事から私たちを自由にして下さいます！私たちが生きる人生とは、本当に永遠の目的地への旅です。はりつけの苦しみについて考えて下さい。イエス様の苦しみは、私たちが理解するはるかに越えたものです。弟子たちは、絶望の中で、望みはもうきかれないと考えました。でも真実は、神様はまだ終わられなかったのです！イエス様のよみがえりは生きる希望の勝利を持ってきたのです。弟子たちは絶望から神様の驚く計画へと行きました。あきらめないで！あなたは力強い勝利をもってこられる生きる神様を信じることができるのです！
Thank you for the living hope that you give, Lord. I know that there is nothing impossible with you. Take the circumstances of my life and use them to glorify your name! I trust you even when I don’t understand, because I know your character of love and wisdom.
神様、あなたの与えられる生きる希望に感謝します。あなたとなら不可能はない事を知っています。私の人生の状況を取り、あなたの御名を栄光をたたえるように使ってください！私は理解しない時さえもあなたの愛と知恵のため、あなたを信じます。

1 Peter 1:4 ペテロ１ 1章4節
and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade — kept in heaven for you, NIV
また、朽ちることもけがれる事も、消えて行く事もない資産を受け継ぐようにしてくださいました。これはあなたがたのために、天にたくわえられているのです。
We have an inheritance that no one can tax or dispute. Our inheritance cannot be changed. It is imperishable and it is eternal. We can’t imagine the magnitude of our inheritance, but we can trust God’s love, wisdom, faithfulness and grace to lead us towards that living hope! Stephen, the first Christian martyr, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God and said just before his death, "Look, I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." (Acts 7:55-56) Stephen caught the glimpse of his inheritance from earth. We must remember to always “… fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. (Hebrews 12:2-3) Our destiny is to live with Jesus in heaven. The road may be bumpy but we must all keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, because the road leads home!
私たちは、誰も課税や、異議を唱えることができない遺産を持っています。私たちの遺産は変わることができません。それは、不滅で永遠だからです。私たちは遺産の規模を想像できませんが、生きる希望へと導く、神様の愛、知恵、信仰と恵みを信頼できます！最初のクリスチャン殉教者、聖霊に満たされていたステパノは、天を見つめ、神様の栄光と神様の右に立っておられるイエス様をみてこう言った。「見なさい。天が開けて、人の子が神の右に立っておられるのが見えます。」（使徒 7章55～56節）ステパノは地球から彼の遺産をちらりと見ました。私たちはいつも思い出さなければなりません。信仰の創始者であり、完成者であるイエスから目を離さないでいなさい。イエスは、ご自分の前に置かれた喜びのゆえに、はずかしめをものともせずに十字架を忍び、神の御座の右に着座されました。あなたがたは、罪人たちのこのような反抗を忍ばれた方のことを考えなさい。それは、あなたがたの心が元気を失い、疲れ果ててしまわないためです。（ヘブル 12章2～3節）私たちの運命は天国でイエス様と住むことです。その道は、でこぼこかも知れませんが、その家へと導いて頂くために、イエス様にすべて目をくぎ付けにし続けなければなりません！
Jesus, thank you for being the author and perfecter of my faith! You know exactly what I need to purify my faith. My trust is in you! My eyes are fixed on you, my Lord and my God!
イエス様、私の信仰の創造者、完成者となってくださり感謝します！あなたは私の信仰をきよめるために何が必要かご存知です。私の信頼はあなたの中にあります！私の目は神様に据えられます。
June 7-Thursday ７日－木曜日
1 Peter 1:5 ペテロ１ 1章5節
who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. NIV
あなたがたは、信仰により、神の御力によって守られており、終わりのときに現わされるように用意されている救いをいただくのです。
Our hope is anchored in Christ. That part of us that is imperishable. Our souls are protected by the power of God. The Almighty Sovereign God divinely guards our souls! Sometimes, when we are in the midst of a bumpy, difficult road, we can lose our perspective. That is when we have to stop, think, and realize that God understands and He has a purpose and a plan. In faith, we know His character of mercy, love, and hope is the basis for our trust in Him. We can accept the road leading us in our journey to our inheritance. Can the Lord deliver us out of difficulties? Yes, absolutely! But will He if it is not in our best interest? We don’t have to fear what is going on, but simply trust Him to lead. You are not alone in your journey! Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 28:20 “Lo, I am with you always even to the end of the age.” We are never alone!

Faith and trust God in all things is easy to say but really challenging to do! Accepting difficulties definitely stretches our faith! But notice what Peter says, “greatly rejoice.” That means to “greatly rejoice” even in difficulties! Learning the secret of greatly rejoicing even when the road is difficult has power! There are no conditions to our ability to rejoice in the Lord! Our natural inclination is to whine, complain, and or fight back. It takes supernatural grace to commit yourself to rejoicing unconditionally! Our hope isn’t built on a situation or an institution. But is built on the living, resurrected Jesus! You can rejoice greatly!

Remember that difficulties have a purpose! The purpose of trials is to distill our faith, purifying it and keeping us more focused on Jesus. Trials teach us humility and compassion. We must realize our own inability to cope in our own strength and discover the power of looking to Jesus. We can’t look at others or point a finger at them in judgment because we recognize that they also need compassion and encouragement to discover the reality of Jesus’ grace and peace. Trials come in different forms and ways. But God is constant. There is nothing He is unable to give the grace, wisdom, and ability to overcome. Let God work in your heart, mind, and soul in all circumstances! Discover the power of God at work in you!

Peter had walked with Jesus. Peter made mind boggling mistakes. He sinned, denied Jesus, and was welcomed back in compassion and forgiveness. Peter understood what the presence of Jesus was all about. He expressed his respect and admiration for those of us who have not seen Jesus, yet believe. Peter understood that through faith we have experienced Jesus in our innermost being. That is a blessing! As we look to Jesus in faith we are given more of His eternal perspective and our ability to rejoice increases. Each struggle and corresponding victory strengthens faith. When we look at God’s grace and provision in the history of our personal spiritual journey, we discover that the Lord is truly faithful. And that strengthens our faith and trust for today.

Even angels long to look into these things. NIV

The Old Testament looked forward to the Messiah in anticipation. Their faith in God was built on His character and the promised Messiah. Some of the most beautiful and powerful praise music was written in the Old Testament, declaring God’s character and trustworthiness. Incredible prophecies, symbols, and word pictures of Christ (Christ is Greek for Messiah) are throughout the Old Testament. Their anticipation created faith. The church from New Testament times looks at Christ from the perspective of the fulfillment of the promise. We read the prophecies and the praises and our faith is deepened as we grow in understanding of God’s marvelous plan. We can read about the life of Jesus and grow in a personal relationship which is rich in discovery of how wonderful He is and the marvelous things He has done for us. There is no end to understanding Him or grasping all that He is, has done, and is still doing. Each day awaits a new discovery of who Jesus is to us individually. Being a Christian isn’t a religion, but a relationship with Jesus that keeps growing stronger as time goes by. People who try to make it a religious activity have missed the true power of knowing Jesus.

Because of all Jesus has done for us, because of His gifts of living hope, peace, joy, and unconditional love, shouldn’t we choose to respond with unswerving commitment and love as well? How can we do this? Peter gives three excellent steps to honor the Lord. First is motivation, keeping your minds set on following the Lord. Remember 2 Corinthians 10:5 “…take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Be aware of the pull of the world which is both strong and subtle. It is strong because it is appealing. It is subtle because we don’t recognize how the lure pulls our focus away from Jesus. For example, we feel like every body else does it…or it is culturally acceptable…or it feels good. The temptations cunningly attract our eyes and senses until our minds flirt with it. Finally we are drawn into a worldly focus, one tiny compromise at a time. Sometimes it is cloaked in religious reasoning, “God loves me so He wants me happy.” Or “if I set rules and obey them, then God will love me more.” Both are self motivated but sound good to justify ourselves in our own eyes. Sometimes ideas tempt; sometimes those ideas become desires. “If only…I have or do this then I won’t want or do another thing.” On and on the list of lures goes! We need to know God’s word and abide in it so we will choose wisely to be motivated and live by God’s standards.

Self-control is so hard! Paul writes in Romans 7:19, “For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do — this I keep on doing.” Do you ever feel like that? Self-control touches every aspect of our lives, attitudes, actions, and reactions. How do we get and stay in command of these areas? We need to be alert to our weaknesses. Are you quick to anger? Are you full of pride, thinking your way is the only right way? Are you quick to judge and criticize? When the Holy Spirit points out your weaknesses do you voluntarily surrender that area of sin? The Living Bible states it like this, “You are living a brand new kind of life that is continually learning more and more of what is right, and trying constantly to be more and more like Christ who created this new life within you.” (Colossians 3:10)The only time surrender leads to victory is when we give up our weaknesses to Jesus. Through surrender we become more like Him and our motivation becomes revolutionized. Jesus’ love for you is unconditional. But that love also wants us to be the best we can be. That reminds me of a time when I was shopping at a second hand furniture store in San Antonio. I found a beautiful dressing table. I could see the possibilities. It was in about twenty different pieces, the mirror was tarnished, and the wood was scratched and dirty. I bought it, took it home, and gave it to my husband to fix. He is a master of repairing and fixing up what is in pieces and looking wrecked. He worked long and hard until the dressing table was absolutely gorgeous. (We gave it to our daughter for her birthday.) Jesus work in us is like this. He sees us as we will be completed in Him. Then he sets to work to repair all that is broken, dirty, and destroyed in us. That process makes us more like Him and enables us by His grace to gain self-control over what was out of control.

The world lures us to desire possessions, power, position, and popularity. The problem is wanting these things. But getting them rarely ever satisfies. Each fulfilled want makes you want more. That is why we need to realize that when our hope is set completely and unchangeably on Jesus we will discover complete and deep satisfaction. Choosing to walk in God’s ways expresses the decision that your hope is based on Jesus. Paul elegantly said it in Philippians 3:13-14 “…I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven.” (NLT) The world has a glittery allure without satisfaction. The living hope we have in Jesus satisfies our souls, spirit, and heart. Remember that surrender to Jesus brings victory. It also brings deep contentment. We discover in yielding and abiding that we have security, rest, and contentment. The secret is fixing our eyes on Jesus!

Remember that Abraham was called “a friend of God” because he was obedient. Wasn’t God gracious to us to include the times that Abraham failed? And we learn of David, “a man after God’s own heart.” His failures were also included in God’s love letter to us, the Bible. Why were they included? Failure isn’t permanent! That gives us hope! Each of these men repented. That was the key to their continued fellowship with God. That is why they are remembered for their obedience. Peter doesn’t accuse his readers of being disobedient but encourages them to stay obedient. How do we keep from slipping back into the old ways? Romans 12:2 tells us “…and do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (NKJV) And who has that transforming power? Jesus, by His resurrection power can transform our minds as we keep our eyes fixed on Him, the author and finisher of our faith. Our power is in making the choice to keep eyes and faith totally on Jesus.

Holy means “set apart” in a very special way. There is purpose in being set apart. Salvation is a free gift. However, the relationship we have with Jesus takes cooperation! Jesus has done the work on the cross to give us victory over sin and death. Our part is accepting His gift, trusting Him, and setting our lives apart to honor Jesus. After all, He set His life apart to honor us by giving His all for us. Shouldn’t we respect and honor Him by responding to Him just as wholeheartedly? How could our lives be transformed if we started each day by praying, “Today, Lord, be the Lord in everything I do and say. I set myself apart from worldly pursuits to seek you first. Teach me your ways so I may walk in them; unite my heart to fear your name.” Then look for ways to set your life, thoughts, and actions apart to honor God.

Micah writes about determination to honor God. “For all people walk each in the name of his god, but we will walk in the name of the LORD our God Forever and ever.” (Micah 4:5 NKJV) We become like who we worship. We have the privilege and awesome responsibility to respond to God’s love and holiness. God’s holiness and purity are perfect and wonderful. He is totally set apart from all others. There is none like Him! As we grow in relationship with Him our desires become more like His. But it is our choice. Just remember, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom…” (Psalms 111:10) True wisdom seeks the Lord and chooses to allow God’s grace to enable us to manage our thoughts and hearts. We choose; He empowers. Isn’t it amazing that the all-powerful, sovereign God chose to give us the free will to respond to Him? Doesn’t that make you want to honor Him even more? Every time I think about that, I am humbled by the Lord’s love for me!

This verse affects us in three ways so it compels us to examine it carefully. First is the reality that we have a true Father! He is not an imperfect one like our earthly father, but a loving, gentle, and real “Daddy.” This Daddy is always available and longs to spend time with you. Because of Jesus, we are introduced to our Daddy. Jesus first mentioned God as Father in Luke 2:40-52 when He was still a child. His last words were directly to His Father in Luke 23:46 when Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last. Over two hundred times Jesus talks about His Dad. Jesus opened the door for us to be adopted by His Dad. Romans 8:15-16 “For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.” When we turn to Jesus and receive Him as our Savior, He says, “Welcome to my home, my Dad is now your Dad, too” Jesus opened the door for us and now we can freely call on our Dad. My earthly father was emotionally distant and unavailable. One day when I was about 22 years old while hanging out the laundry, I was contemplating my relationship with my earthly dad. Suddenly my heart was filled with the words, “You have a perfect Daddy in heaven.” I was overwhelmed with His love for me and His nearness to me. I was able to accept my dad and his imperfections because of my perfect Heavenly Father’s love. So can you as you open your heart to your Heavenly Dad’s love.

It is hard for us to imagine true and impartial judgment. But we do know certain facts that will help lead us to a greater understanding. God is righteous. God is love. God is holy. God can’t forget sin. He can’t let sin rule. But God also can’t forget His love for us. His love reaches out to us through His Son, Jesus. John 3:16-18 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.” God expresses His love through His Son. The other side of the story is His wrath against sin. Romans 1:18 “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness.” 2 Peter 3:9 speaks of the coming judgment against sin and the patience of God always reaching out for mankind to turn to Him. “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” Everyone is being given a chance to repent of sin and come to God, to receive His love and forgiveness. But not everyone is willing. Are you willing? Have you accepted Jesus as your Savior and turned toward perfect love?

Lord, thank you that you do judge impartially. I know that your judgment is perfect, just as your love is perfect. I can’t totally comprehend such perfection but I know you and trust your wisdom in all things.

Always, ALWAYS, remember that as believers in Christ our true citizenship is not in a country on this earth, but it’s in God’s kingdom of heaven, and our behavior is to show that. Job 28:28 “…The fear of the Lord — that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.” Therefore we need to understand that true and reverent fear of the Lord will determine our demeanor and actions. One day we will be held accountable to God for our motivations, attitudes, and actions. Romans 14:12 “So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.” God knows our hearts. He knows if we do things for the praise of man or to honor God. When we get off track we need to immediately confess it. He will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9, my paraphrase). Honoring God starts with heart-motivation. then continues in the mind-attitude, and finally finishes with actions. The reverent fear of the Lord gives us the wisdom and knowledge we need to inspire us to make wise decisions.

Those who have believed in Jesus and have accepted Him as Lord and Savior have been redeemed. What does it mean to be redeemed? It is like using a store coupon instead of money to pay for something. Redemption in the spiritual sense means to be delivered by the payment of a price. An example of this would be to pay a kidnap ransom. Actually the Old Testament is filled with ways to redeem land and animals, as well as people. The Israelites culturally had a solid understanding of what redemption meant. So when the Messiah, Jesus, came they could grasp the truth. One of the purposes of Jesus’ death was the redeeming payment for sin. We are set free. Jesus said “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36) Jesus fully paid the cost of our sin. But we need to accept this gift. You may not feel like a horrible sinner. Therefore you don’t feel in need of redemption. But that is the sin of pride and self-righteousness. We all need to be redeemed. Jesus sacrificed Himself so we could be set free. Shouldn’t we express our gratitude by receiving Him as our Lord and Savior?

Did you know that in the New Testament Peter uses the word “precious” more than any other writer? He used precious six times to describe something of value—two times in chapter 1, first to describe our faith (1:17) and then in verse 19 to describe the value of Jesus’ blood sacrifice. And who would treasure these things more than Peter? He knew firsthand the heartbreak of denying faith and the joy of being forgiven and redeemed. He knew Jesus. He’d seen with his own eyes the punishment that Jesus took for us. Peter’s honoring that gift was truly heartfelt. He wanted his readers to totally comprehend how beloved Jesus is. Jesus loves you enough to treat you as precious and worth every sacrifice to redeem. Do you value Jesus’ sacrifice and the faith you have in Him enough to treat them as precious?

Jesus’ death on the cross was not a surprise or new news in heaven. There were no extra editions of the “heavenly newspaper” announcing it as new information. From before day one of creation it was the plan. Knowing man would sin, God still created us. Isn’t it interesting that one of the devil’s tactics is to attack creation’s story? If he can make you disbelieve in creation, he will chip away at any belief in God’s love and sovereign plan for redemption. The devil sends questions of doubt while God sends promises of living hope. Who will you believe? How will you express appreciation to the Lord for His awe-inspiring love?

Jesus came so we could experience the power of His love. The more we are aware of who the Lord is, His plan of salvation, His love, and sacrifice, the more His goodness inspires our faith to mature. Throughout the promises and prophecies given in the Old Testament, and then through the description of Jesus life, death and resurrection in the New Testament God has made it clear that His gift is all about us. Out of appreciation shouldn’t we make our lives all about Him? He has loved us with an eternal, loyal love. How can we give Him less than our committed love and show reverence to Him by being centered on Him? We have all failed Jesus at one time or another. But Jesus has never, ever failed us! Our hope and destiny are found in Him!

There is power in obedience! It feels simpler to obey rules and regulations than to obey godly principles. If we are simply following rules and regulations, we feel like we have made ourselves righteous by what we are doing. But we can’t do that all by ourselves! We need God’s grace and redemptive power to be at work in us! If obedience was just a set of rules we would soon become like the Pharisees, proud of how we follow the rules, but missing the heart behind the rules. True obedience puts God first and, with a teachable heart, chooses to live by godly principles. When we read the Bible, we need to learn how to use God’s truth positively like a shovel. Why a shovel? Digging deep into our hearts (motivations and attitudes) allows God’s truth to bring changes in us. Be careful not to use negative shoveling! The negative use of shovel is to read it and then try to shovel it in someone else’s direction to make them more acceptable in your eyes. The point is to have the word of God at work in your own personal life!

Jesus’ prayer in John 17:20-23 is for us to learn how to be in unity, recognizing our common commitment and goal. Look for ways to be sincerely supportive, encouraging, and living in love that forgives and accepts others for who they are. Love isn’t blind. You can see other’s faults and weaknesses. But by God’s grace you choose to overlook them. If you are being judgmental and have a negative attitude toward others, then don’t you think it is time to examine your own heart! Remember to look for ways to choose to love, support and encourage others, forgiving and accepting them. We are all sinners saved by grace and we all sometimes fail. You want others to forgive, accept, and love you, don’t you? Then give them the same gift! Loving others is living in obedience to God’s truth. As you do that, your heart is purified!

Growing older isn’t for wimps! Everything following birth will change and we don’t have any choices over most of the changes that take place! Aging helps us to realize how perishable life is. But when you accept Jesus, you experience what being “born again” means. This spiritual birth is something you have chosen. Not one of us chose to be born the first time! We all enter this world in tears from leaving the safe haven of our mother’s womb. But when we choose to accept the fresh start that comes from being born again, we enter the family of God. This time the entry is with rejoicing! And every step you take toward Him is a positive step of growth and maturity that is everlasting. Growing in maturity and experience with God is positive. Absolutely nothing can diminish it! The Word of God living experientially in you is indestructible and powerful! Physically, you begin to understand how you aren’t as strong and as powerful as you were when you were younger. But spiritually, you discover the true, eternal power for living that only increases with the knowledge of who God is to you.

Know what’s truly valuable! The natural inclination of the human condition is hypocrisy, jealousy, and backstabbing. You may not think so at first. But if break your true human feelings down, you will discover how much of your motivation, attitude and reactions are based on the negative! It’s painful but true! Sin is easy. But be wise enough to choose to live by the Word of God. God wants you to really know Him. Make the choice to seek God’s face. When You said, "Seek My face," My heart said to You, "Your face, LORD, I will seek." (Psalm 27:8 NKJV) By seeking God’s face you are expressing your desire to know God’s character of goodness and love that will then work in your heart toward spiritual maturity and enable you to develop a heart like His.

Lord, your face will I seek! I want to know you and have the wonder of who you are change my heart. I want a heart like yours! I don’t want to be ruled by negative, sinful motives but be ruled by your heart of goodness and love.

Every time you read the Bible you learn about God and what godliness means. Every time you receive good, sound Biblical teaching you are learning practical ways to apply God’s truth. The Word of God shows us how we can be transformed in our thinking to be more in line with God’s character of righteousness and holiness. Living by Biblical truth reforms our lives by molding our motivations in purity. That helps us to understand the value of a godly attitude and challenges us to be wholesome in our actions. Studying the Bible brings positive spiritual strength to our lives. Take time to be with God by reading His word. Let it work in you with power and authority to give you a clean heart.

“Taste and see” is a challenge to personally experience God’s goodness and continue to get to know Him. As you grow in your relationship with him you gain firsthand understanding to let you enjoy and savor how awesome and wonderful He really is. Tasting cannot be truly done secondhand! If you want to enjoy eating something good, do you have a friend eat it for you and tell you that it is good? Or do you take the time and make the effort to personally taste and enjoy it? Seek God. Personally experience His transforming power in your life. And learn to live your life in ways that honor God. Then you will discover how great and awesome He is!
